With a wide range of anti-ageing products and procedures that exists today, many of us are at a lost as to what is effective and what is not. Recently, a new procedure has been developed to tighten skin and take years off your age. The results are absolutely amazing. This technology is known as HIFU and it is set to make waves in the industry and change the game. Let us find out more about what HIFU is.
1. Explain the science behind HIFU?
Bio Aesthetic Laser Clinic: As we age, neck and facial skin laxity increases resulting in the appearance of deep rhytids and jowling. This is contributed by increased laxity of the superficial muscular aponeurotic system (SMAS), a thin layer of muscle underlying the facial skin as well as a loss of facial collagen.
‘Age Tite’ uses high intensity focused ultrasound waves to penetrate deep into the skin to target the SMAS layer of underlying facial muscle and the deep dermal layer of the skin. This noninvasive technique allows for full facial rejuvenation with no downtime.
The ‘Age Tite’ transducer delivers a highly directed, acoustic wave of energy to a precise focal point of between 1 mm3 to 1.5 mm3 causing intermolecular vibration and heat production. Controlled injury to the target layers elicit collagen remodeling, dermal thickening and tightening of the SMAS which results in general skin tightness and a noninvasive face lift.
2. Is HIFU safe for anyone?
Bio Aesthetic Laser Clinic: The technology of using therapeutic focused ultrasound for facial lifting has been around since 2009. It is a relatively low risk procedure when performed by a certified doctor as it does not use radiation, lasers or injectables. There are very few contraindications except for patients with open facial wounds or severe cystic acne. Patients with facial implants and fillers will also need to avoid treatment directly over those areas as it may lead to volume loss of the filler or implant.
There is no downtime with the procedure as the energy bypasses the epidermis so patients can continue their usual skin care regime and return to their normal routine immediately.
3. How often should I do HIFU?
Bio Aesthetic Laser Clinic: There may be mild erythema and edema immediately after the procedure lasting 24 to 48 hours due to stimulation of inflammatory mediators which gives the appearance of reduced wrinkles. But the optimal results will usually be seen about 2 to 3 months later after the fibromuscular and collagen remodeling has occurred. This benefit will last 9 months to 1 year depending on lifestyle, after which the procedure can be repeated for maintenance.
Some patients with a lower threshold, may prefer using lower energy levels with more frequent 1 or 3 monthly sessions to get optimal results. This can be discussed during consultation to customize the treatment for individual patients.
4. What are the signs my skin would benefit from a HIFU?
Bio Aesthetic Laser Clinic: This is an ideal procedure for patients who have mild to moderate skin laxity or sagging. Younger patients, in their 30s or 40s, have a more vibrant wound healing response and inherent skin elasticity leading to better results so starting early with this procedure is advised. Severe skin laxity with not yield good results from this procedure.
5. Why are the results “more than skin deep” with HIFU treatment?
Bio Aesthetic Laser Clinic: Unlike RF which penetrate only to the epidermis and dermis layers of the skin through thermal heating, HIFU is able to target much deeper layers of the dermis and the fibromascular SMAS layer below to give longer lasting effective results without risk of injury to the epidermis. Therefore making it an ideal procedure for busy individuals who do not want downtime or multiple treatments within several months.
