Interview With House Of Sheens


Founded in 2012, the House of Sheens is a luxury lifestyle brand snakeskin and leather bags & accessories for the individualistic woman who desires to exhibit the bolder side to her personality. Crafted by regional artisans within South-East Asia, their bags exude exotic Asian touches, with prints, bold colors and subtle elegance. We spoke with the founder of House of Sheens, Shireena, to find out more about her brand.

VL: How did you get into this?

S: I started House of Sheens because I have a love of handbags and I wanted to be able to design bags and shoes that I would love to wear and share with my family and friends. It started off a small idea to manufacture a few bags but it has since grown in size and we are expanding into leather and women’s shoes. I am passionate about each angle of my business from working with young talented designers, to the humble craftsmen as well as partnering with charitable organisations to give proceeds back to those less fortunate. Each aspect of the business is managed by me and is expanding to overseas markets, and my sister, Soraiya, based in India will also be joining the business to take it to the next level.


VL: What is the inspiration behind your collections?

S: The main inspiration behind the last collection which was created by a student at MDIS was the geometric lines and shapes found in nature. The designs are almost futuristic but in very classic shapes and styles. The colors are simple black python accented with bold, striking pop of leather in silver, royal blue and gold. Our latest limited edition collection was done for SG50 which included a small classic Ava Mano box clutch with diagonal patterns of red and white python resembling the colours of the Singapore flag.


VL: Which is your absolute favourite piece from your collections?

S: One of my favorite pieces has to be the Anya Tote in chocolate brown. The leather is so soft and luxurious and the tote is roomy, well crafted and so versatile. I use mine everyday and even when I travel its perfect and light and easy so dress up or down.


VL: How do you juggle being an image consultant, fashion entrepreneur and a mom of 2 all at once?

S: Its definitely hard to run two businesses and two crazy children, but I firmly believe there are enough hours in a day to do everything you want. Sometimes it is challenging to race around the whole day, switch hats from a corporate coaching one, to a more creative one and then switch completely off when I am with my children. And usually once they are asleep I work again in the evenings. I love being a mom, and being a good role model to my children, I try and show them the importance of living a healthy, full, happy life and they do know that I do different work, but I also make it a point to be at every one of their activities and put them to bed every night. I am so passionate about both my businesses that one cannot survive only doing one.


VL: What can fans expect from the next collection?

S: Fans can expect some exceptional things coming up as we are expanding our range to include different types of leather and hardware for our bags. We can expect to see more personalized clutches, and a larger range of more classic everyday affordable leather bags. We have also started the process of making a very luxurious elegant ladies pump with intricate cutouts and gorgeous fit.


VL: Why should everyone own a piece of House of Sheens?

S: Everyone should own a piece of luxury, and we definitely believe our exotic skins are great quality and at an affordable price.


VL: What’s your take on Vanilla Luxury having being one of their very first clients?

S: VL is doing great things, and run by the most talented, young, and truly passionate, marketing gurus in Singapore, Gursheel – that’s why I am working with them. :) She has a keen way of understanding the gaps in your business and is not afraid to tell you what to do in order to grow.
