The "Chinese Michelin" Arrives: Exploring the 2026 Black Pearl Restaurant Guide
The 2026 "Black Pearl" Restaurant Guide features 135 elite establishments across Singapore, Bangkok, Taipei and Seoul
While the Michelin Guide is a household name in Singapore, a prestigious new titan is shifting the culinary spotlight: the Black Pearl Restaurant Guide (黑珍珠餐厅指南). Hosted by Chinese tech giant Meituan, the 2026 awards ceremony was held at Marina Bay Sands on 23 March 2026. For foodies, restaurateurs, and travellers alike, the Black Pearl is now essential for navigating the modern global dining scene.
Launched nine years ago, the Black Pearl Guide is often dubbed "China’s Michelin". However, it distinguishes itself by evaluating restaurants specifically through the lens of the "Chinese Palate". The guide serves as a cultural bridge, helping over 150 million users discover world-class dining that resonates with Eastern aesthetics and international standards.
In 2026, the guide expanded its reach significantly, featuring 135 restaurants across seven major overseas cities, an 18.4% increase from the previous year.

Distinguishing itself from guides centered on Western techniques, the Black Pearl Restaurant Guide utilises a "Chinese palate" as its core criterion. Evaluations are based on a unique three-dimensional scoring system that assesses culinary excellence through the quality of ingredients and technique, the level of hospitality and dining environment, and a restaurant's ability to honor culinary traditions while embracing innovation.
This rigorous process culminates in a Diamond rating scale: Three Diamonds represent a once-in-a-lifetime culinary masterpiece, Two Diamonds denote a perfect choice for special occasions, and One Diamond signifies a high-quality destination for social or family gatherings.
The 2026 guide highlights a massive shift toward AI-driven dining. Chinese travelers are increasingly using "AI Assistants" to make dining decisions, with food-related interactions making up 31.9% of AI usage. For restaurants, this means adopting smart receptionists and intelligent ordering systems to keep up with the tech-savvy "in-depth tourist".
The 2026 list covers Singapore, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Tokyo, Bangkok, and the newly added Seoul.

Singapore (The Host City)
Singapore saw a total of 18 restaurants awarded. A major highlight was the debut of Pangium, a one-Diamond restaurant by Chef Malcolm Lee located in the UNESCO Botanic Gardens, which focuses on deep-dive Peranakan culture.
- Three Diamonds: Les Amis (French) and Odette (Modern French).
- Two Diamonds: Jaan by Kirk Westaway (Modern British).
- Annual Dish Awards: Recognised Odette’s Kampot pepper-crusted pigeon and Restaurant Born’s monkfish with jade fungus and chicken fat.
South Korea (The New Debut)
For the first time, Seoul was included in the guide with 8 local restaurants making the list. This follows a massive surge in Chinese tourism, with 190,000 visitors during the 2026 Spring Festival alone.
- Seoul: Mingles, a leader in modern Korean cuisine that fuses traditional Korean flavours with international techniques. Jungsik is often credited with pioneering the "New Korean" fine dining movement.
Hong Kong & Macau
These regions remain the heavyweights of the guide:
- Macau: Featured newly promoted Diamond restaurants like Chef Tam's Seasons.
- Hong Kong: Highlighted innovative spots like JEE (One Diamond), which replaces Western fats with chicken oil and Shaoxing wine. Other winners include Wing (One Diamond) and VEA Restaurant (Two Diamonds) by Chef Vicky Cheng.
Thailand & Taipei
- Bangkok: Chai Jia Chai (Two Diamonds) stands out for applying traditional Chinese techniques like rehydrating dried seafood to contemporary formats.
- Taipei: MUME (Two Diamonds) for its focus on sustainable Taiwanese ingredients.

The Black Pearl Restaurant Guide (黑珍珠餐厅指南) is a prestigious culinary guide launched by Meituan. Often described as "China’s Michelin Guide," it is the first professional restaurant guide tailored specifically to the "Chinese palate". It serves as a bridge between Chinese culinary aesthetics and global dining standards.
The guide uses a unique evaluation system that differs from Western guides by focusing on three core pillars:
- Culinary Excellence: The quality of ingredients and technique.
- Service and Experience: The hospitality and dining environment.
- Inheritance and Innovation: How a restaurant respects culinary tradition while embracing modern creativity.
Instead of stars, Black Pearl uses a Diamond rating scale:
- Three Diamonds: An ultimate, once-in-a-lifetime culinary experience.
- Two Diamonds: A perfect choice for special occasions.
- One Diamond: A high-quality destination for social or family gatherings.
The 2026 guide features 135 restaurants across 7 major cities outside of Mainland China:
- Singapore (The 2026 Host City)
- Hong Kong
- Macau
- Taipei
- Tokyo
- Bangkok
- Seoul (New Debut for 2026)
Seoul made its debut as the fourth overseas city due to a massive surge in interest from Chinese travelers. During the 2026 Spring Festival, Seoul welcomed 190,000 Chinese tourists, and online searches for the city's dining scene spiked by 9%. Eight local Seoul restaurants were awarded in this inaugural year.
Technology is now a major part of the dining journey. Data shows that 31.9% of interactions on Meituan’s AI Assistant are now food-related. Additionally, restaurants are using AI-powered tools for smart reservations, queuing, and digital ordering to better serve international diners.
Singapore hosted the 2026 ceremony at Marina Bay Sands. A notable winner is Pangium, a new One-Diamond restaurant by Chef Malcolm Lee. Located in the Botanic Gardens, it was recognised for its in-depth exploration of Peranakan culture and heritage.
